Personal Statement

Jonathan Allen, MA
Art therapist

Jonathan works as an art therapist within education and is registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). He graduated with an MA in Art Psychotherapy from Goldsmiths College, London. Jonathan now works with a diverse range of client needs within schools. Working with a non-directive, person centred approach, Jonathan is constantly deepening his understanding of the relevant theory that supports his therapeutic practise.

Areas of Special Interest:
- Children and young people
- Family work
- Loss and bereavement
- Learning difficulties
- Trauma and abuse

Jonathan has worked with children who have witnessed domestic violence, children
who have suffered neglect, emotional, physical and / or sexual abuse. His clients have
included children with speech and language difficulties, learning difficulties and children
on the autistic spectrum.

On a 1:1 basis with clients and in small groups, Jonathan has a wealth of experience
working with children of primary school age. Furthermore, Jonathan has experience of
working within adult mental health for the NHS. Within this setting, Jonathan worked
with young adults on the autistic spectrum and adults who have experience of psychosis,
OCD, severe anxiety and depression.

Jonathan convenes a weekly pastoral team meeting in one of the schools he works in.
This meeting of multidisciplinary professionals addresses child protection concerns,
the physical and emotional well-being of the school community and considers
appropriate new referrals for art therapy.

The triangular nature of art therapy (client, art, therapist) is often expanded in Jonathan's
work to include clients' families. This can be instrumental in thinking about difficult
emotional struggles the client is facing and can support an improved emotional
attunement in the important relationships that continue outside the art therapy room.
